Platelet rich plasma (PRP) ready for injections for hair loss by cosmetic dermatlogist Dr. Sergio Gaitan in Miami, Fl

What is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)?

Platelet rich plasma is a form of regenerative medicine that harnesses the natural growth factors from your body to stimulate hair growth.  The platelet rich plasma is separated from the red blood cells and leaves a nice yellow color, which is why it so often called “liquid gold”. The red blood cells are inflammatory, so it is very important to get the best separation in order to get the best results in hair loss.  The PRP (plasma) is then injected into the scalp for hair loss. Here at our office, Certified Cosmetics and Skin Care in Miami, FL, we use the ProGen PRP Platelet Rich Plasma system.  Making sure you get the best of the best PRP (Plasma) injections treatment for your hair loss.

Does PRP (Plasma) Injections
help with hair loss ?

Yes, PRP (Plasma) injections help with hair loss. However only in the right circumstances. PRP (Plasma) injections have been studied mostly for genetic male and female hair loss.  When PRP (Plasma) injections  are used in combination with other treatments it has a great synergistic effect in hair loss.

How Successful is PRP (Plasma) Injections for hair Loss?

When used correctly PRP (Plasma) injections are very successful in hair loss. The key is to have the correct expectations with the results to expect from PRP (Plasma) injections for hair loss. PRP (Plasma) injections will not grow you new hair where there is no hair follicle. In order for PRP (Plasma) injections to work for hair loss the hair follicle must be present.  The growth factors  in the PRP (Plasma) injections acts like a fertilizer to stimulate new hair growth and decrease hair loss.

What are the disadvantages of PRP (Plasma) injections for hair loss ?

The main disadvantage of PRP (Plasma) injections for hair loss is discomfort during treatment. The discomfort is very short lived and we use a special vibrating tool to minimize the discomfort during the PRP (Plasma) injections . There also may be slight bruising or swelling that self resolves after PRP (Plasma) injections . The other disadvantage of PRP (Plasma) injections for hair loss is that results may vary. The reason being is the PRP (Plasma) injections main effect depends on the platelets of the individual.

How often should you do PRP (Plasma) injections for hair loss ?

We recommend a series of 3 treatments of PRP (Plasma) injections for hair loss spaced 1 month apart . In my experience after the first PRP (Plasma) injections treatment the hair is stronger and longer. After the second and third PRP (Plasma) injections treatment is when you really start to see the thickening of the hair .

How long does PRP (plasma) injections last for hair loss ?

It really depends on the individual and what other medications they are using for hair loss, how long the effect of the PRP (Plasma) injections last. In my practice, I see results of PRP (Plasma) injections for hair loss can last between 2-4 years before more sessions are needed to maintain your hair.

Is there anything I should know about before or after PRP (plasma) injections for hair loss ?

You should not take any anti-inflammatory medications or supplements that can affect your platelets one week prior to and one week after PRP (Plasma) injections for hair loss treatment. Cigarette smoking also makes platelets less effective.  After PRP (Plasma) injections treatment gentle hair care is recommended avoiding any heat, coloring, or treatments.

* anti-inflammatory medications (Aspirin,Ibuprofen, Aleve, Advil, Celebrex, Naproxen, etc.), and supplements (fish, oils, turmeric, ginseng, etc.)

Is PRP (plasma) injections worth it for hair loss ?

I definitely think PRP (Plasma) injections for hair loss are worth it.  PRP (Plasma) injections for hair loss helps keep the hair alive.PRP (Plasma) injections for hair loss also help thickening around existing hairs.

Once that hair is loss, currently there is nothing that can help revive it.
